Dermaplaning in Calgary: Is It Worth It? Benefits, Who It’s For, and When You Should Avoid It

One of the most common questions I hear at Freya MediSpa & Wellness is:
“Should I get dermaplaning?”
It’s understandable why.
Social media makes it look like everyone is walking around with perfectly smooth, glowing skin after one treatment.

The truth?
Dermaplaning can be an incredible treatment but only for the right person.
Like every treatment we offer at Freya, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Your skin deserves a customized approach based on your concerns, goals, and skin health.
Let’s talk about what dermaplaning actually is, who benefits the most, and when it’s better to choose another treatment instead.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a safe, non-invasive exfoliation treatment performed using a sterile surgical blade.
The blade gently removes:
• Dead skin cells
• Surface debris
• Peach fuzz (vellus hair)
• Built-up dull skin
The result is smoother, brighter skin that reflects light better and allows skincare products to penetrate more effectively.
No chemicals.
No heat.
No downtime.
Just healthy exfoliation performed by a trained professional.
What Are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?
1. Instantly Smoother Skin
Many clients notice the difference immediately.
Their skin feels incredibly soft, smooth, and refreshed after just one treatment.
2. Makeup Applies Beautifully
Foundation often sits unevenly because of:
Dead skin buildup
Dry patches
Tiny facial hairs
Removing these creates a smoother surface, allowing makeup to glide on more evenly and naturally.
Many brides choose dermaplaning before their wedding for exactly this reason.
3. Brighter, More Radiant Skin
Dead skin cells can make your complexion look dull and tired.
Dermaplaning reveals fresher skin underneath, giving your complexion a healthier, more radiant appearance.
4. Better Skincare Absorption
If your skincare is sitting on top of dead skin, you’re not getting the full benefit.
After dermaplaning, serums and moisturizers absorb more effectively because they can reach the skin instead of sitting on a layer of buildup.
5. Gentle Exfoliation for Sensitive Skin
Some people can’t tolerate stronger acids or chemical peels.
Dermaplaning offers an excellent alternative for improving texture without using chemicals.
Does Dermaplaning Make Hair Grow Back Thicker?
No.
This is probably the biggest myth about dermaplaning.
The fine facial hair removed during treatment is called vellus hair.
Because dermaplaning cuts the hair at the surface, it may feel slightly different as it grows back, but it does not:
❌ Grow thicker
❌ Grow darker
❌ Grow faster
Hair growth is controlled by your hair follicles and hormones not shaving or dermaplaning.
Who Is Dermaplaning Good For?
Dermaplaning is ideal if you have:
✔ Dull skin
✔ Dry, flaky skin
✔ Rough texture
✔ Fine facial hair
✔ Makeup that doesn’t sit well
✔ Mild pigmentation
✔ Healthy skin that needs a refresh
It’s also a great treatment before:
• Weddings
• Graduations
• Vacations
• Professional photos
• Special events
When Dermaplaning Is NOT the Best Choice
Although dermaplaning is safe for many people, there are situations where I recommend another treatment instead.
Active Acne
If you’re experiencing inflamed acne or cystic breakouts, dermaplaning isn’t appropriate.
The blade can spread bacteria across the skin and further irritate inflamed lesions.
Instead, we may recommend treatments like acne facials, chemical peels, IPL for acne, or a personalized acne treatment plan.
Skin Infections
Dermaplaning should be postponed if you have:
Cold sores
Active rashes
Open wounds
Skin infections
The skin should be fully healed before treatment.
Severe Rosacea Flare-Ups
While some people with mild rosacea can safely have dermaplaning, those experiencing active inflammation may benefit from calming treatments first.
Very Sunburned Skin
Recently sunburned skin is already compromised.
Adding exfoliation too soon can delay healing and increase irritation.
Can Dermaplaning Help Acne Scars?
Not significantly.
Dermaplaning improves the appearance of surface texture and brightness, but it doesn’t reach deep enough to remodel acne scars.
For acne scarring, we usually recommend:
• RF Microneedling
• Secret PRO Fractional CO₂ Laser
• Medical Microneedling
• Chemical Peels
These treatments stimulate collagen deeper within the skin to soften and improve the appearance of scars over time.
How Often Should You Have Dermaplaning?
Most clients benefit from treatment every 4 to 6 weeks, which aligns with the skin’s natural renewal cycle.
Regular treatments help maintain smoother skin, improve product absorption, and keep your complexion looking fresh year-round.
Is There Any Downtime?
One of the reasons dermaplaning is so popular is that there is virtually no downtime.
Most people return to work, errands, or social events immediately after treatment.
Your skin may look slightly pink for a few hours, but this usually settles quickly.
Because fresh skin is exposed after treatment, daily sunscreen is essential to protect your results.
Is Dermaplaning Right for You?
Dermaplaning isn’t about following a trend it’s about choosing the treatment that makes the most sense for your skin.
At Freya MediSpa & Wellness, we take the time to assess your skin, understand your concerns, and recommend treatments based on what will give you the best long-term results not just what’s popular.
Whether dermaplaning is the right choice or another treatment would serve your skin better, our goal is the same: healthier skin, lasting results, and confidence in your own complexion.
