Can Acne Scars Be Removed? A Calgary Medical Esthetician Explains

One of the most common questions I hear from clients at Freya MediSpa & Wellness is:
“Can acne scars actually be removed?”
The answer is:
It depends on the type of acne scar, how severe it is, your skin type, and what treatment options are available to you.
After more than a decade as a Medical Esthetician, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients struggling with acne scars. I’ve seen clients hide behind makeup, avoid photographs, and lose confidence because of the marks acne left behind long after the breakouts were gone.
The good news is that many acne scars can be significantly improved, and in some cases become barely noticeable.
Let’s talk about what’s actually possible.
First, Not Every Acne Scar Is a Scar
Many people come into the clinic believing they have acne scars when they actually have post-inflammatory pigmentation.
These are the red, pink, brown, or dark marks that remain after a pimple heals.
Pigmentation is not a true scar.
It is simply leftover discoloration from inflammation.
The good news?
Pigmentation often responds very well to treatments such as:
Medical-grade skincare
Chemical peels
Laser skin rejuvenation
IPL treatments (for appropriate skin types)
Microneedling
Sun protection
True acne scars are different because there has been permanent damage to the skin’s structure and collagen.
The Different Types of Acne Scars
Not all acne scars are the same.
Ice Pick Scars
Ice pick scars are narrow, deep scars that extend into the skin.
They often look like tiny puncture marks.
These are typically the most difficult acne scars to treat because they extend deep into the dermis.
Boxcar Scars
Boxcar scars have defined edges and create a shallow or deep depression in the skin.
They are commonly found on the cheeks and temples.
Rolling Scars
Rolling scars create an uneven texture that causes the skin to appear wavy or dimpled.
These scars often respond well to collagen-stimulating treatments.
Hypertrophic Scars
These scars appear raised rather than depressed.
They are more common on the chest, shoulders, back, and jawline.
Understanding the type of scar is one of the most important steps in choosing the right treatment.
Why Acne Scars Form
Acne scars develop when inflammation damages collagen and supporting structures within the skin.
The deeper and more inflamed the breakout, the greater the risk of scarring.
This is one reason why I encourage clients to seek acne treatment early.
The sooner active acne is controlled, the lower the chance of permanent scarring.
Picking, squeezing, and manipulating blemishes can also increase the likelihood of scarring.
I know it’s tempting.
I also know almost everyone does it.
But your future skin will thank you for leaving those pimples alone.
Can Acne Scars Be Completely Removed?
This is where I like to be honest with clients.
Most acne scars cannot be completely erased.
Anyone promising that is setting unrealistic expectations.
What we can often achieve is a significant improvement in:
Skin texture
Skin smoothness
Scar depth
Overall skin appearance
Confidence
Many clients see improvements ranging from 50% to 90% depending on the type of scarring and treatment plan.
What Treatments Work Best for Acne Scars?
RF Microneedling
RF Microneedling is one of my favourite treatments for acne scars.
The treatment combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen remodeling deeper within the skin.
Benefits include:
Improved texture
Reduced scar depth
Increased collagen production
Minimal downtime compared to more aggressive procedures
At Freya MediSpa, RF Microneedling is one of our most requested treatments for acne scarring.
Traditional Microneedling
Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin.
This stimulates your body’s natural healing response and encourages new collagen formation.
It can be very effective for mild to moderate acne scarring.
Fractional CO2 Resurfacing
For deeper acne scars, Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing may be recommended.
This treatment creates controlled channels in the skin and stimulates significant collagen remodeling.
It can produce dramatic improvements but typically involves more downtime.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels can be beneficial when acne scars are accompanied by pigmentation and uneven skin tone.
While peels do not significantly improve deep scars on their own, they often work well as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Why Calgary’s Climate Matters
Living in Calgary presents unique challenges for skin healing.
Our dry climate can leave the skin dehydrated and compromise the skin barrier.
When treating acne scars, hydration and proper home care become especially important.
A strong skin barrier helps optimize treatment results and supports healthy collagen production.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
This is another question I hear every day.
The honest answer is:
There is no magic number.
Most clients require a series of treatments.
Acne scars develop over years.
Collagen remodeling also takes time.
Many clients begin seeing improvement after their first treatment, but the most noticeable changes typically occur over several months as new collagen develops.
Patience is important.
The skin is rebuilding itself from the inside out.
My Advice as a Senior Medical Esthetician
If you’re struggling with acne scars, don’t assume there is nothing you can do.
Some of the most rewarding transformations I have witnessed were not about achieving perfect skin.
They were about helping clients feel comfortable enough to leave the house without makeup, stop avoiding photographs, and regain confidence.
The best treatment plan starts with a professional assessment.
Every scar is different.
Every skin type is different.
And every client deserves a customized approach.
